Bi-directional bias type meter with shape memory alloy spring is adopted as the basic structure. By using shape memory alloy springs, the meter responds extremely quickly to temperature changes. Even in the unlikely event that the oil cooler is clogged and the oil pressure rises, the bias spring ensures a relief passage. The thermostat unit has a valve that opens when the oil temperature is low and does not flow to the oil cooler, but returns to the filter via the bypass passage. The valve closes and flows to the oil cooler when the temperature is above about 70 degrees, thus preventing overcooling.
■About Shape Memory Alloy Springs
Shape memory alloy springs are made of Ni-Ti alloy, which has a crystalline structure called austenite phase at temperatures higher than the shape recovery temperature. When cooled, it transforms into the martensitic phase, which can be easily deformed by external forces. When deformed, the crystal structure changes to a deformed martensite phase, and when heated, the structure returns to the austenite phase, giving the Ni-Ti alloy a rubber-like elasticity without plastic deformation.
