It was a motard motorcycle based on the hot off-road model, DR-Z400S. Not only did it have road patterned tires of small diameter, it also adopted a SHOWA inverted front fork, same type as the ones of RM series, which was the first mass-produced model to have its front fork finished with Kashima coating (a proprietary hard anodizing processing that Miyaki Company of Japan has invented). It also refined its driving system to become a street model by having parts like the swaged swing arm or the Φ 310 front disc brake. The chain adjuster was also changed from the Snell camshaft type of the DRZ400S to the standard slide type, which was more rigid and adjustable. For the RK EXCEL aluminum wide rim (front: 3.5 inch, rear: 4.5 inch), an exclusive type of compound high grip radial tire was combined. The water-cooled DOHC engine was equipped with a BSR Φ 36 carburetor and an air cleaner of 6-liter capacity It was basically the same as the DRZ400S; only the final gear ratio was changed to make it match with the outer diameter of its tire. When it underwent the minor change, it newly adopted a taper handlebar that was light and also exceled in rigidity balance. They were the ones of the commercially sold moto-crosser RM series. At the end of the front and rear axle shaft, a protective sliders were equipped. The rearview mirror was changed from the round type to the square type. For its color, a new blue & white color was added to its standard yellow or black coloring. The yellow model had a graphic pattern of the image of a street model. The price was raised by 2000yen (excluding tax). In accordance with the change of the handlebar, the overall width was downsized by 20mm, and the height was raised by 10mm. No changes were made to the power specification.
